Today we entered the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and came to a stop in Bamberg. There are nine breweries in town and over a 100 within a 20-mile radius. This is beer country. It was very hot today so while on tour we tried our best to stay in the shade.
This would have been a good day for Water Jousting. No one would mind too much jumping into the cooler water. We walked on and saw some colorful buildings and wall art work. Some of these were plaques which we couldn’t read since we don’t know German, but they were neat to see.
There are ads above businesses to advertise what is being sold. The one with a stork carrying a baby must be a maternity store.
We went to the Prince Bishop’s garden today. It was serene and we got a good shot of the city from above. Then, of course, our main reason for getting to Bamberg: Getting a beer…and not just any beer. We got some Smoked Beer!
It turns out that a long time ago the brewery caught on fire. It didn’t all burn to the ground. The owner could have spent his time trying to repair the damage to the brew but he decided to leave it alone. At first taste we weren’t convinced that we liked it. As we kept drinking it developed a sweeter taste and we are hooked. Michal, blue group leader, purchased some to take back to the ship.
Back on ship we had lunch and later in the day got a look at the ship’s tiny kitchen. Those cooks sure know how to use space to to cook and serve several course meals to 96 passengers and crew. This ship can host about 140± guests. It’s amazing what they can do.
