Northeast of San Antonio, Texas, there is a Giant Armadillo that we had to take a picture of. Unfortunately, it is fenced in behind the local flea market in Schertz, Texas. We thought about going in but it was so crowded. Cars were backed up on the road waiting to enter.
We got a picture of the armadillo’s backside through a fence and borrowed another from Roadside America to see the front side. Roadside America is a website we get many tips and clues about places to visit.
Jorge’s mom (100 years old) and dad (90 years old) just moved in a month ago with brother Art, his wife and two children. The children appear to adore mom. She is happy and excited to be there.
We got pictures of everyone but the wife. Camera shy, don’t you know! After dining at the Saltgrass Steakhouse, we gave everyone our love and were on our way.
The destination was Hutto, TX. It is famous for its many hippos! According the Wikipedia, “Hutto's mascot comes from a local legend related to the International-Great Northern Railroad. The legend traces its roots back to 1915, when a circus train stopped at Hutto to pick up passengers and let the animals out to feed. One of their hippos ran loose towards Cottonwood Creek, causing the train to be delayed and other trains to be stopped. The hippo was eventually herded back onto the train.”
The city has purportedly registered over 5,000 to 10,000 concrete hippos which can be found in front of homes, businesses, and public spaces. We got pictures of just a few of them.
Next we headed to the Franklin Drive Thru Safari in Franklin, Texas. You pay to drive in and we also bought some feed to give to the animals.
It didn’t take much to attract the animals as they surrounded each and every vehicle that went by. The hardest part of our trip was not letting their heads in through our windows.
At one point, two camels stood in front of our vehicle and would not let us pass. Pretty funny! It was not possible to get pictures of all the animals; there were many of them.
Deer, especially baby ones, were aplenty. They were so cute.
