Since we had a tour to Versailles scheduled for 1:00 p.m. we decided not to do go to one of the museums. We didn’t want to miss Versailles.  Instead, we wandered around the ship and then retraced our neighborhood walk from day 2.  We had a close look at La Javelle, a guinette. A guinette is a riverside place for drinking, eating dancing etc.  It had been hopping on the week-end but pretty quiet this morning.  Docked beside La Javelle is a boat that provides shelter for homeless men.

We boarded the bus for Versailles and Isabelle turned the mike over to our local guide Jean Louis.  Versailles was the epitome of opulence, from the Hall of Mirrors, to the painted ceilings to marble and gold. Jean Luis was the perfect guide.  He taught us a little French history by quickly assigning us roles to play.  Ellen was Louis XIV’s royal mistress until replaced after ten years by a younger model. The gardens were well worth the walk even in the rain.

We returned from Versailles and set sail for Conflans. Off at last!
