We went back to the state capitol area to visit the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. That’s a long title for a very well presented museum. They are big on audio. Everywhere we turned some speaker was telling us a story. It’s a very interesting approach to showing people what they are looking at. No docent required.

BTW, the statue of Lincoln outside the Capitol is not the original one! (See yesterday’s photo.) The museum houses the original statue and it looks as if it made out of wood. There was so much to see at this museum. While Ellen complained that Chuck Yeager was missing, Jorge was delighted to see a small section honoring his boyhood hero, Jerry West. He is the logo of the NBA!

It may be understandable that some make fun of the Mortality Statue in Beckley WV. He looks as if he is smelling his left underarm. However, the subject is no laughing matter. Click on the picture to see what we mean.

We ate lunch in Lewisburg WV at a lovely downtown diner. Then we headed to the North House Museum. It turns out that Robert E. Lee had spent time here to purchase his horse, Traveller. Also, they have a chair Lee supposedly sat on.

The story of Katherine Johnson is also told. She was a local black girl and mathematician who became one of NASA’s main computers. That’s right, computers were first humans. There’s much more to see in that museum.

We’ve taken the less beaten path this trip. What a thrill!
