We were happy to leave “civilization’ behind today and we were ready to drive on some small roads. We were not disappointed. However, before leaving Interstate 80, we stopped to see the Devil’s Slide.
According to Wikipedia, “Devil's Slide is an unusual geological formation located near the border of Wyoming in northern Utah's Weber Canyon, near the community of Croydon in Morgan County, Utah, United States. The slide consists of two parallel limestone strata that have been tilted to lie vertical, protruding 40 feet out of the mountainside. Intervening layers have eroded more quickly, forming a channel some 25 feet wide running hundreds of feet down the mountain.” Somebody placed a human skull there and added a horn. Very funny!
In the town of Kremmerer WY we found the statue of J.C. Penny. Yes, that’s the founder of JC PENNY stores. He is located at one corner of a triangular park. Across one street you’ll actually find a very functional JC Penny store…and it’s the “Mother Store” (founded in 1902)!
So Ellen had to go in and check it out. It was a blast from the past. Jorge does have one picture of the inside posted here.
We tried to find a place to eat lunch but the one restaurant in town is closed on Mondays. So we headed for the road to try our luck.
This part of Wyoming is a very flat, prairie area. Absolutely beautiful! And today we saw our first clouds in the sky since leaving Los Angeles CA. We got a few good shots to show you.
Harvey Morgan is a character we familiarized ourselves with as we discovered how he and two companions were brutally killed by Indians in 1878. The Fremont County Pioneer Museum in Lander WY covered the gruesome details. It also has lots of tiny exhibits that show the daily life of the town. It’s a gem!
